No Installation Required Outdoor Security Cameras

Technology has moved us along to the point where we don’t need a professional installer to install high definition security cameras at our homes and small business. Long lasting battery powered high definition security cameras have now come onto the market and you can install them yourself in minutes. A few of these cameras don’t even require you to have tools or any knowledge of security camera technology to install them yourself.

Completely wireless security camera systems are now more affordable than ever and the technology embedded in them allows you to get high definition videos in areas it would be hard or expensive to install a wired security camera.  Now the term wireless security camera is a misnomer. Any security camera that needs to be plugged into a power outlet is not really a wireless security camera. The term, for years, only meant that you didn’t have to run video wiring to a digital recorder (DVR) or TV monitor directly. Not connecting the video wire would be the wireless part but that defeats the purpose of putting the security camera anywhere you wanted, especially outdoors.

The only tool you do happen to need to install and connect these completely wireless security cameras you already have and that’s your mobile phone. Companies that manufacture these cameras have stuck to the K.I.S.S. mantra. Keep It Simple Stupid. It only takes two steps to install, view and playback video from the cameras on your phone.

My favorite security camera that is completely wireless is the Ring Stick UP camera. If you’re familiar with the Ring doorbell cameras then you’ll understand the concept of this camera. The camera app plays a wind chime sound every time someone loiters in front of the camera (at the certain times you want to be notified of motion in that area) and it does not require direct power. It can last for several months without recharging the internal batteries but what I love even more about the camera is that you can install a small add-on solar power panel that will keep the camera powered continuously without having to take down the camera to recharge their batteries. The added solar panel is small and it cost less than $50. The best part of the Ring camera is that it doesn’t have a base unit. It connects wirelessly to your Wi-Fi modem, router or router extension. I’ll explain later why that’s important.

Next on my list, is the Netgear Arlo Pro. It’s much smaller and sleeker than the Ring Stick Up camera and has a slightly better night vision infrared emitter. The base unit can handle up to 5 wireless security Arlo and Arlo Pro cameras. The Arlo Pro cameras also have 2-way audio with a two button easy setup to view and playback video directly from your phone. It also can include a small solar power panel for $79 but I like to use the Arlo Pro for its sleekness. It’s almost invisible to the naked eye because of its shape and white color that blends with most backgrounds so in most cases the panel isn’t used but it’s available to allow continuous power to the unit.

Third on my list is EZVIZ Mini Trooper security camera. Mini Trooper has a similar look to the Netgear Arlo Pro but lacks 2-way audio. It does have a mic that allows you to hear the camera’s surroundings but you won’t be able to communicate with someone from the camera itself. It also lacks a solar power panel add-on to connect to for continuous power without having to recharge but the video quality is just as good as the Netgear Arlo Pro and even a better quality than the Ring Stick Up camera. With its shortcomings, there are 2 very good reasons to love this battery operated security camera. One is the price. The EZVIZ Mini Trooper is almost half the price of the Netgear Arlo and Ring Stick Up cameras also if you already have a Hikvision or LTS wired security camera system which is the bulk of the camera systems we sell here at HomeRestored.com and is one of the most sought after security camera systems in the market, you will be able to view the cameras with the same app as both of these camera systems and use it as a completely wireless extension of these wired systems. Imagine being able to view your house from the fence line or nearby tree.

Ultimately, these completely wireless security cameras that are powered by internal batteries have features you can’t find in traditional security cameras like audio and safe off premise recording online. You also save money when it comes to installation since each of these cameras has an easy online connect solution which anyone can do with from their mobile phone. Another great feature of each of these security cameras is their connectivity to home automation devices and lights. You can easily have the cameras turn on lights or other devices inside or outside of your home or business when the security cameras detect motion with their smart motion detection. You can also activate sirens and warn intruders to stay away with a recorded message device or tell them live on the camera while you view the perpetrators from your mobile phone.

The only problem I find with some of these battery-operated security cameras is the range. In Florida and other cities and states with new construction, either of these camera systems would be perfectly fine. I’ve installed all of these cameras in large homes with pools and detached garages with no range problems but if you live in an older city or state with old brick or stone walls you will find that your range is less than half of what you’ll get in other locations. If you are trying to cover a very large home or a home or business with thick walls, your range will be somewhat limited which can be remedied by placing the base unit as high as possible or on the second floor of your home or business since Wi-Fi spreads more evenly from top to bottom. Ring security cameras work differently than these other two security cameras. Ring cameras do not have a base unit. It connects directly to your wireless modem or router. If the modem/router is too far for a good Wi-Fi connection then you can connect a Wi-Fi extender to extend your reach as far as you need it.

There are visual limitations to these battery operated security cameras to keep in mind. One, each of these cameras are in 720p wired security cameras now days have 1080p and up to 4K viewing options. That means on these security cameras, you are not going to read license plates or be able to see details in someone’s tattoo. You can zoom in digitally but you will not be able to zoom in manually. Most of the cameras are fixated at 3.6 to 4mm which gives you a wide view. You will not be able to adjust the lens to be able to focus on a particular location but with the freedom of completely wireless placement, this shouldn’t be a problem.

These security cameras are the next evolutionary jump in home automation and security. The internal batteries in both the Arlo Pro and EZVIZ Mini Trooper are changeable and battery technology is on the cusp of their next leap. Expect battery power to nearly double over the next 5 years and solar power panels to get even smaller where it might be even smaller than the security cameras themselves. For now, battery operated security cameras are a great investment for homes or vacation homes. Someday soon they will be powerful enough to be placed just about anywhere.
